Frequently Asked Questions

IS IT SAFE TO HUNT IN MEXICO?

Yes – for over 20 years we have been traveling to Sonora, Mexico, and have never had any safety issues. There are thousands of Americans who travel to Mexico to hunt every year without issue as well. At MX Hunting Co, our hunters' safety is always top of mind.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO BRING MY OWN FIREARM?

We’ll send you a gun permit application to fill out in the springtime before your hunt. On this application, you’ll fill out the information about yourself and your firearm and optic (things like make, model, serial number, caliber, etc). Once you return the form, we’ll process the permit and you’ll be emailed a copy.

There can be NO mistakes on this form, or your firearm will not be allowed in the country. Assuming your form was filled out correctly, there should be no issues getting your firearm in and out of the country.

Your original permit will be waiting for you upon arrival in Mexico. If you’re crossing by land, someone from our team will meet you with your original permit. If you arrive by air, our guides will provide the original to the customs officer at the airport.

Please note:

    • Firearms MUST have a hard case and the magazine unloaded during transportation.
    • You can bring up to 100 rounds of ammo. It MUST be boxed.
    • Suppressors are NOT allowed in Mexico.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE ANIMALS ONCE HARVESTED?

Once you’ve harvested, we take care of the hide and antler prep so that they meet U.S.D.A import requirements. Then, you decide how you’d like to transport your trophy back home (see FAQ “How to get trophies back home”). The meat is not allowed to be transported and will be donated to the locals.

HOW TO GET THE TROPHIES BACK HOME?

There are 2 options:

1. Transport them yourself:

  • If you’re flying – you must use American Airlines from Hermosillo to your home destination. They will allow you to transport your trophy as a checked bag. There will be a wrapping and prep fee at the airport (depending on when you harvest, this is not always an option).
  • If you’re driving – you can personally cross your trophy at any border station where they will inspect it.

2. You can use our affiliate Mexican exporter. Their fees are as follows:

  • Mule Deer – $650
  • Desert Sheep – $875
  • Coues Deer – $350

These fees include cape and antler cleaning, USFWS inspection fee, packaging, shipping, and handling.
